Clinch Fighting Bunkai for Pinan Shodan

October 19, 2018

Physical confrontations often end up in the clinch, for a variety of reasons. Generally, the enemy tries to control the victim with the clinch, or the defender may be successfully striking the enemy, who then clinches up to stop the striking. Whatever the reason may be, the clinch is not a good place to be in a self-defense situation: you cannot escape, the enemy has a better chance of controlling and harming you, and his accomplices can more easily attack you. In a self-defense situation, you want to get out of the clinch as quickly as possible. The opening moves of Pinan Shodan/Heian Nidan provide a possible strategy for escaping the clinch.
