Fukyugata 1 “High Block” Bunkai

Kata not only teach us specific striking, kicking, and throwing techniques, but they also instruct us on joint locks and basic combative principles. In this video, Sensei Hogsette explains how the high block motions in Fukyugata 1 can be applied as neck strikes following a failed throw attempt. He also discusses an arm bar application for the “low block” following the first “high block” technique. Lastly, he demonstrates how the kata motions can be used to clear the attacker’s arms/hands to open up targets for counter strikes.
