Sensei Hogsette teaches kata and bunkai (practical applications) simultaneously. In this video, he demonstrates some bunkai applications of the opening sequences to Fukyugata Ichi (the first basic kata in Matsubayashi-ryu), which is the only portion these beginners know at this point. He teaches a portion of the kata, then the bunkai, and students practice both together. This way, they see kata and application as related and, essentially, the same thing.
